HARRIS COUNTY -- A 37-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after being shot several times while in her own home.

Police said the suspect was killed by a Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable. The 27-year-old man was also the woman's ex-boyfriend, investigators said.

"The deputy challenged the suspect out in the street and the boyfriend pointed the gun at the deputy and started rushing him. The deputy fired a number of shots and he died at the hospital," said Sgt. Ben Bell of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division.

The homeowner called 911 at 3:15 a.m. Saturday saying her ex-boyfriend was trying to break into her home.

The boyfriend took off but as officers responded to the call, the deputy saw a car speeding through the neighborhood and followed it to the 11000 block of Spring Path Court.

"The deputy saw the man get out of his car and walk up the door and fired probably seven or eight rounds at the front door. The woman was inside and was hit several times," Bell said.

The suspect died at the hospital.

Police confirm there have been other 911 calls made from the house.

Neighbors say the ex-boyfriend was a problem.

"Stalking, yes that's a good word for it. He would drive up and down the street with his lights off. He tried multiple times to get back into her life and unfortunately it ended this way," said neighbor Lee Evey.

No information about the deputy constable was released.

The 37-year-old woman had surgery early Saturday morning and is expected to fully recover.
