A Houston police sergeant investigating an auto break-in Friday fatally shot a man who he said lunged at him, investigators said.

The man's identity had not been confirmed late Friday by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2 a.m. at the Tidwell Estates apartments in the 1200 block of West Tidwell.

The officer, 24-year HPD veteran Charles W. Jones, was off-duty and not in uniform while visiting a friend at the complex, said Capt. Bruce Williams.

"The officer demanded that the man get out with his hands up," Williams said.

"The man got out of the vehicle, but lunged toward the officer with a metal object, later determined to be a large screwdriver."
