HUMBLE, Texas -- An off-duty police officer killed a man after the man shot a woman outside a Humble employment office on Tuesday, police told KPRC Local 2.
Humble police said the shooting occurred outside Workforce Solutions in the 9600 block of F.M. 1960 West near the Eastex Freeway at about 11:30 a.m.
It started as an argument between a man and woman who were apparently in a relationship, officers said.
"He fired some while she was in the vehicle, ran around outside the vehicle and fired some more shots, so there's been several shots fired," said Lt. Jay Wrobliske of the Humble Police Department.
The woman got out of the vehicle and collapsed on the sidewalk. Several people ran to help her. She suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is expected to recover.
The officer, working an extra job, saw the man with the gun, and shot and killed him, investigators said.
The officer was not injured.
About 100 people were inside the Workforce Solutions office when the shots were fired.
"We just heard the gunshots and they were telling everybody to get down," a witness said.
"(I thought) 'Oh, God, please don't let it be me that's been shot' cause it was so close," witness Karen Punch said. "We all held up in a cubicle together and trying to look around to make sure the guy wasn't inside or what, because it was so close. It sounded like he was inside."
Investigators have not said how many shots were fired.
The suspected gunman's identity was not released.
