HOUSTON -- A police officer shot a man while serving a drug warrant on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said officers went to the Sherwood Pines Apartments on Sherwood Lane near Helberg Road at about 5 p.m. to serve a search and arrest warrant.
Officers went to a unit and told the people inside to get on the ground, officials said. Three of the people complied and a fourth went after one of the officers, police said.
"As the officer was rounding a narrow hallway, he was confronted by a male suspect who attempted to reach for the officer's weapon," HPD spokesman Kese Smith said. "It's very dark, it's very cramped. The officer, fearing for his life, fired his weapon one time, striking the suspect in the abdomen."
The man was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition.
Investigators said they believe the man the officer shot is the man whose name was on the warrant.
The officer, who is a 15-year veteran with the narcotics division, was not injured.
