HOUSTON—A Houston police officer said he was forced to shoot and kill a man Saturday after the man began to struggle with the officer during a search.

It happened in the 6900 block of Rampart near Bellaire in southwest Houston.

Around 10:55 p.m., HPD officers said they saw three men in a convenience store parking lot with an open container of beer, which is a class C misdemeanor.

As they were detaining the men, police said one man began to struggle with an officer during a search attempt.

The officer said the man began to reach for a gun. That is when the officer opened fire, shooting the man several times. He died on the scene.

The other two men were taken in for questioning, but later released. No charges were filed against them.

HPD Homicide, Internal Affairs and the District Attorney's office is investigating.
