Man with a knife is shot by constable

A man with a knife was shot in the upper chest Monday by a Precinct 3 deputy constable after threatening his grandparents, a neighbor and the deputy, authorities said.

The unidentified 24-year-old suspect suffered a graze wound and is expected to survive, said Precinct 3 Constable Ken Jones.

Precinct 3 deputy constables were called to the 14000 block of Kemrock at Purple Sage about 5 p.m. after the man, who family members said suffers from schizophrenia, took a knife from his grandparents' home and threatened the elderly couple.

His grandfather, who recently had a pacemaker put in, wrestled with the man, who then left and confronted a neighbor, Jones said.

A deputy constable told the man 10-15 times to drop the knife and lie down, Jones said.
