SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas - An 18-year-old suspect in an alleged stolen car refused to give himself up and ended up getting shot by an officer within the City of South Houston, police say.
South Houston Police Chief Herbert Gilbert says the suspect was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Corpus Christi. When a South Houston police officer attempted to pull him over, the man lead him on a short chase.
By 10:30 p.m. Sunday, South Houston police officers converged on the fleeing suspect at the intersection of Allen-Genoa and Spencer Highway.
Chief Gilbert says the suspect rammed into one of the police cruisers. When the officer from that vehicle got out of his car, Gilbert says the suspect continued on driving in the direction of the officer.
"At that point, it appeared that the suspect was trying to leave," said Gilbert. "We believe at least two shots were fired."
One of those shots hit the suspect in the upper left side of his chest. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital were he is expected to survive.
Gilbert says the officer involved with the shooting had been with the City of South Houston police force for about two years. The incident is under investigation by the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
