Man in custody dies after 'episode'

A southeast Houston man died late Monday after he went into convulsions and stopped breathing while in police custody, authorities said. Police arrested Darrell Lauderdale, 44, on suspicion of public intoxication about 11:40 p.m. in the 6000 block of Vasser. Houston police officials said Lauderdale, of the 5900 block of Westover, had a "psychotic episode" after he was taken to HPD's southeast patrol station jail at 8300 Mykawa. Jail workers called for an ambulance and performed CPR on Lauderdale. He was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. HPD homicide and internal affairs detectives on Tuesday were investigating his death, officials said.
