Man threatened his mother, then police

(7/21/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Police shot and killed a man who first threatened his mother and then officers with a pipe.

Police say they responded to a domestic disturbance call at Foster and Yellowstone in southeast Houston on Saturday night. When officers arrived, the man came out of the house swinging a pipe.

Investigators say he continually smashed a squad car, ignoring the officer's request for him to stop. They hit the man with a Taser, but it had no effect. Police say when he lunged at two officers and they fired, killing him.

"Anytime we lose a life, it's a tragedy," said Houston Police Capt. Bruce Williams. "This is a 39-year-old male who is no longer with us, based on his own conduct."

One officer went to the hospital. Police say he may have been hit by ricocheting bullets from the officers gunfire. He is expected to be OK.

The incident is still under investigation.
