A Houston police officer was injured and a suspect was dead after an officer-involved shooting in southeast Houston Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m.

Officers responded to the home in the 6600 block of Foster after a call saying Steven Guillory, 39, was threatening his mother with a knife.

When they arrived, they observed Guillory carrying a large metal pipe in the front yard. They said he appeared agitated and began verbally abusing the officers.

A Houston police officer was wounded when two other cops discharged their weapons during a standoff with an armed suspect. Police said Guillory threatened three officers with the pipe.

Officer T.K. Richardson attempted to subdue Guillory with his Taser, to no effect.

Police report Guillory then took the pipe and began beating an HPD patrol car with it, breaking most of the windows and lights. The pipe broke while he was hitting the car, so he threw away the smaller piece and advanced toward the officers with the larger piece.

After repeated commands to stop, two of the officers, T.D. Jackson and R.B. Wieners, discharged their weapons.

Richardson sustained a gunshot wound to his calf from one of the officers' rounds and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Guillory was struck at least once and pronounced dead at the scene.

Guillory's family said he was a paranoid schizophrenic. They said they had tried to get him into a mental hospital, but with little success.

The suspect reportedly lived at the location with his mother, and the police had been called to the residence a number of times. Previously, the family said, they had been able to control him without violence.

“They need to help him instead of killing him. There’s help to be done,” the suspect’s sister, Vines Guillory, said.

HPD Internal affairs and Homicide are investigating the case.
