HOUSTON - A man is shot and wounded by an officer during a traffic stop in southeast Houston. The shooting comes one day after the Houston Police Department said it would review its deadly force policy.
Police say the officer tried to stop the driver of a pickup truck at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for a traffic violation, but the man refused to pull over.
The driver eventually stopped at the intersection of Pederson Street and Noel Street where the officer said he ordered the suspect out of the truck, but the man did not immediately respond.
Once outside the truck, police say the male suspect further ignored the officer's commands and proceeded to reach into his pants. Fearing the man had a weapon, the officer shot the driver in the upper neck.
The driver was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in serious condition. A male passenger in the truck was arrested. Neither of the men have been identified.
The shooting officer was identified as Brenton Green. Police say he has served HPD for 15 years.
Records show that in 2009, 15 people were killed when HPD officers used deadly force, while 17 other people were wounded. On Wednesday, acting chief Charles McClelland said the department would review its deadly force policy.
