HOUSTON—A man was in custody Wednesday after a brief police chase ended in a shootout.

Harris County deputies were waiting for a man with outstanding warrants in front of a home near Louisville and Uvalde when the man spotted them and took off.

Deputies gave chase, and the man crashed the car.

He jumped out and ran away, and a deputy followed him.

That’s when deputies said the suspect started shooting. “He did have a gun. Officers believe that he did fire, so the officer returned fire, striking the suspect several times. He was grazed once in the head and he was also hit several times in the legs. The suspect at that point did surrender,” Christina Garza of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital, but a woman who was in the car with him got away. It was unclear what kind of warrants the suspect had, but deputies said he had a long criminal record.
