HOUSTON -- Two men were hospitalized after a shootout with a Houston police lieutenant, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said four men tried to carjack an off-duty officer in the 5600 block of Doliver Drive at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was working a private security job for a Tanglewood subdivision.

Investigators said the officer was in an undercover car and in full uniform when two men approached him with guns.

"(They) made several demands and also made threats to his life," Detective Rick Moreno said. "Shots were fired. The off-duty officer returned fire. Two of the suspects were wounded."

The wounded men were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released.

Police said the other two men got away.

The officer was not injured.

"He's out here just about every night," resident Jerry Rebman said. "I know him. My friends know him."

Rebman said the officer, a 29-year veteran of HPD's robbery division, makes the community feel safer. He's patrolled the area for about five years.

"He's a nice guy," Rebman said. "He's good to have on your side."

Investigators said the officer's attackers face felony charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated robbery.
