HOUSTON -- A Harris County reserve deputy charged with murder surrendered to authorities on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Harris County Precinct 6 said that Jose Castillo, 39, is accused of killing Angel Erevia Jr., 31, in a fight outside a north Houston bar in the 2700 block of North Shepherd on Friday. Castillo was reportedly dating Erevia's estranged wife.

Castillo was not on duty at the time.

Castillo was fired from Precinct 6 for failure to follow departmental guidelines and for being charged with a felony.

Castillo was with the department since February 1994 and worked in the civil division serving civil papers. Officials said he volunteered his time with the department and was never on payroll.

Castillo was never issued a weapon, but was allowed to carry one without a permit as a peace officer.

Castillo's bond was set at $100,000.

Investigators said Castillo admitted to the shooting.

Houston police are handling the investigation.
