Ex-reserve officer charged in killing
A former reserve Harris County deputy constable has been charged with murder in a fatal shooting last week at a Heights-area nightclub, authorities said Monday.
Police said Jose Castillo, 39, shot Angel Erevia, Jr., 31, several times during a brawl about 2 a.m. Friday outside Buffalo Fred's Icehouse, 2708 N. Shepherd.
Castillo, assigned to the Precinct 6 constable's office, was off-duty at the time of the slaying. He has since been fired, authorities said today.
The shooting happened shortly after Erevia's estranged wife and girlfriend got into a fight inside the nightclub. Castillo and the estranged wife then approached Erevia and his girlfriend once the club closed, police said.
Castillo pulled out a gun and began shooting, striking Erevia in the back, abdomen and both arms. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, where he died, police said.
