Man accused of shooting wife killed by police in West University

Authorities found wife's body in car

(8/20/07 - KTRK - HOUSTON) - A man who police say shot and killed his wife was then shot and killed by police.

It's a bizarre story as investigators tell us the man not only put his wife's body in his car, he drove to a church on Bellaire at Stella Link and told people inside to call the authorities.

This all began around 6pm Monday near the Astrodome. Eyewitnesses say a woman, possibly a dental student, crossed the street and came face to face with her husband, who police say was armed with two handguns and a shotgun. The nightmare that followed unfolded in front of at least a dozen eyewitnesses.

"They witnessed a man pulling up to a woman, who I guess was walking up to her car over here and five shots fired point blank, to my knowledge, and then drove off," said witness Brandon Carroll.

Investigators say the husband then drove to St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Bellaire near Stella Link. Eyewitnesses say the man, who was still armed with the weapons, entered the church and told those inside to call police.

They did.

"They (officers) arrived at this location and the suspect then walked out and engaged them with hostile gunfire," said Captain Bruce Williams with the Houston Police Department.

The two officers involved -- one from South Side and the other from West University -- were not injured and no one inside the church was hurt. Witnesses are being interviewed by HPD.

The identity of the couple hasn't been released.
