A deputy U.S. marshal shot and wounded a man who authorities said tried to run him down Tuesday with a vehicle belonging to a man reported missing.
The wounded man underwent surgery at Ben Taub General Hospital, but his name and information on his condition were not available Tuesday.
He and a companion were in a white 2007 Dodge Charger owned by the missing man, Stacey Trent Lockett, 41, Harris County sheriff's deputies said.
Lockett has several drug-related convictions according to court records, the most recent coming last week, but investigators said they have not confirmed whether his disappearance involved that case or any other drug activity.
Missing man was at motel
Lockett had been registered at a motel in the 14100 block of the Tomball Parkway in northwest Harris County. A motel manager reported to the sheriff's office about 5:30 p.m. Monday that Lockett was gone and the room splattered with blood. His car was also missing.
Members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force stopped the car about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday on Martin Luther King Boulevard at Reed Road, police said.
The driver tried to run down the officers, sheriff's investigators reported, and the deputy marshal fired on the car as it sped away. The driver stopped in the 5700 block of Beldart at MLK and the two occupants ran. Police caught them nearby. No officers were injured.
Authorities continued the search for Lockett.
On probation
According to Harris County court records, Lockett was sentenced to eight years' probation and assessed a $500 fine on June 2. The sentence resulted from his arrest in May 2007 on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
In 1991, Lockett pleaded guilty to delivery of crack cocaine and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to court records. In 1987, he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to three years in prison.
Lockett's uncle, Troy D. Lockett, said Tuesday that he had no details on the disappearance.
``We're trying to find him," Troy Lockett said. ``We're just waiting to find out.''
