A man shot by a deputy U.S. marshal has been charged with capital murder in the death of a man whose car he was driving when the shooting occurred, authorities said Thursday.
Ambrose Chaptmon, 26, is being held without bond in the Harris County Jail after he told sheriff's deputies where they could find the body of Stacey Lockett, investigators said.
Lockett's body was found about 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of Parnell in southeast Houston, wrapped in a motel bedspread, sheriff's Sgt. Bryan Pair said.
An autopsy was conducted Thursday at the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, he said.
"We believe Chaptmon met with Lockett with intentions to rob Lockett," Pair said.
Lockett had been registered at a motel in northwest Harris County.
A motel manager reported to the Sheriff's Office Monday that Lockett was gone, his room spattered with blood and his car missing.
Authorities stopped the car about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday on Houston's south side, police said.
The driver, identified as Chaptmon, tried to run down the officers, investigators reported, and a deputy marshal fired as the car sped away.
The car stopped in the 5700 block of Beldart at MLK and the two occupants ran, but were caught nearby. No officers were injured.
Chaptmon, whose wound was treated at a hospital, pleaded guilty to drug possession in November 2007 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, according to Harris County court records.
