HOUSTON -- A security guard shot a man who had been breaking into his vehicle, Houston police said.

The guard, whose identity has not yet been released, is also a Harris County Precinct 6 reserve deputy, a police spokesman said.

Investigators said he was working at his job as a security guard at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rendez Reception Hall in southwest Houston when he came out of the building to see a number of people by his personal vehicle, including two inside it.

It appeared to the guard that they were removing items from the vehicle, police said.

The guard identified himself as a security guard and ordered them to stop. One of the men jumped out of the car and started running. The guard repeatedly told him to stop.

The man lifted up his shirt, reached for his waistline and turned toward the guard, police said. It is unknown if the man had a gun.

The guard feared for his life and fired his weapon, hitting the man, who was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.

Three other suspects are in custody.
