HOUSTON—An HPD officer shot and killed a man police say stabbed his girlfriend and a Good Samaritan late Friday night.
It happened at an apartment complex in southeast Houston at Winkler and Howard near Hobby Airport.
According to police, the man and his girlfriend were arguing around 11:30 p.m. when he started stabbing her repeatedly.
Neighbors called 911, and one of them, 62-year-old Tereso Olvera, went over to try to save the woman. The carpenter grabbed his sledge hammer before he left, his daughter said.
“My dad got up, barefoot, no shirt just in shorts. He was laying down on the couch,” said Anna Olvera.
A Houston Police Department spokesman said the first officer on the scene was Officer M. Marin, who had been working traffic detail close by. He arrived just in time to see the suspect fatally stab Olvera, the spokesman said.
Marin said when he told the suspect to drop the knife, the suspect lunged at him instead.
Fearing for his safety, Marin opened fire, killing the suspect.
The suspect’s girlfriend was rushed to Ben Taub in serious condition. She was in stable condition Saturday afternoon.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect or his live-in girlfriend.
