High-ranking officer accused of harassment demoted

(4/28/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON)

HPD has demoted police Chief Harold Hurtt's former chief of staff after an internal investigation into allegations that he sexually harassed a fellow HPD employee.

The department demoted Lieutenant Joe Buttitta two levels to the rank of senior police officer. A woman who used to work in Chief Hurtt's office accused Buttitta of sexual harassment.

She has since transferred out of Hurtt's office. Buttitta will get a new assignment by May 6.

He is currently working away from the office at 1200 Travis, away from his accuser.
